About
Saharawi Voice
Saharawi Voice is a grassroots initiative dedicated to amplifying the voices of the Saharawi people and advocating for their fundamental human rights in the face of the Moroccan military occupation.
Based in the Saharawi refugee camps, we empower Saharawis to share their stories, perspectives, and aspirations with the world through digital media, photojournalism, and film.
Our mission is rooted in the belief that every individual has the right to dignity, cultural identity, protection from oppression, and self-determination.
By equipping young Saharawi with the tools and knowledge to tell their stories, we challenge silence and invisibility, bringing global attention to the ongoing struggles of the Saharawi people against exploitation and abuse. In doing so, Saharawi Voice directly combats the Moroccan media blockade, breaking through barriers of censorship and erasure to ensure the Saharawi narrative reaches international audiences.
Founded in 2011 in the Smara refugee camp with the support of the German-Arab Institute, Saharawi Voice began as a series of workshops introducing social media as a platform for advocacy.
Over time, it has evolved into a Saharawi filmmaking powerhouse, with filmmakers and creators producing compelling films, photojournalism, and digital storytelling that resonate with audiences far beyond the camps.
Through creativity and resilience, Saharawi Voice remains committed to building platforms where Saharawi voices can be heard—unfiltered and unapologetic—sharing their lived realities and their hopes for justice and freedom.
